Is this pouch recyclable?

Yes - However, it is essential to note that this pouch is not curbside or thin-film recyclable because it is a multi-layered film. This pouch can only be recycled with multi-layer film through specialized recycling programs such as Ridwell. If you cannot access these specialized recycling programs, this pouch should be disposed of in the landfill.

What products can I put in this pouch?

Pouches are made with multi-layered, flexible film and are designed to serve as a more efficient and eye-catching alternative to rigid plastic, glass, and paperboard packaging. They are most commonly used for food packaging - granola, pet food, tea - but are increasingly used for packaging nonfood items, including apparel and personal care items.

A pouch's film is the most essential specification to consider when deciding what product to package in a pouch. Your selected film must have the moisture and oxygen barrier specifications that your product requires when packaged. We recommend testing your products within the pouch if you do not know your barrier requirements.

This pouch is ideal for products that do not require barriers including apparel, component parts, seeds, pre-wrapped foods, and pet treats.

Is this pouch FDA-compliant and safe for food contact?

Yes, this pouch's contact layer complies with the requirements for polyolefin resins intended for food packaging applications, as described in the FDA olefin polymer regulation 21 CFR 177.1520(c)2.2. They may be used in contact with all types of food as defined in Table 1, 21 CFR 176.170(c) and at use conditions B-H as defined in Table 2, 21 CFR 176.170(c).

Why does EcoEnclose stock PCR pouches instead of pouches that can be thin-film recycled?

We decided to prioritize pouches made with PCR (post-consumer recycled content) because most consumers put pouches in landfills. Most pouches are made with virgin materials, so it's powerful to collectively create demand for post-consumer recycled content in pouch films to make recycled content in pouches more mainstream over time.

While pouches can be designed to be thin-film recyclable, facilities are unlikely to recycle them successfully. If a thin-film recyclable pouch ends up in the recycling stream, it is challenging for material recovery facilities to determine if it can be recycled because it looks, feels, and acts the same as pouches that cannot be recycled. If they are metalized or not thin-film recyclable, they can shut down the entire line, which is a very costly issue for the facility.
