Flexi-Hex®: A Fresh Approach to Packaging
Posted By on Apr 14th 2025
We’re in an exciting era for sustainable packaging. Conscious consumers are more discerning than ever. Innovative brands are embracing eco-friendly packaging not just as a sustainability measure but as a defining part of their identity. Governments worldwide—and across U.S. states—are accelerating regulatory changes that demand better packaging solutions.
Even brands that aren’t sustainability-first recognize that packaging is no longer just a box. In an age of infinite scrolling and one-click purchases, the physical act of receiving, opening, and experiencing a package is a rare and powerful opportunity to connect. Packaging is now a brand experience.
These dynamics have driven the rise of material innovations, creative packaging designs, and technologies like automation and right-size boxing. And they’ve made us incredibly excited to announce this renewed partnership between EcoEnclose and Flexi-Hex®.
EcoEnclose is proud to partner with and offer Flexi-Hex®—a beautifully designed, curbside recyclable, paper-based protective solution for various products. With sustainability at its core, Flexi-Hex® helps businesses lower their environmental footprint without compromising protection, cost, or aesthetics.
Flexi-Hex® is proud to forge a close partnership with EcoEnclose. As a leading U.S. provider of sustainable packaging, EcoEnclose is on a mission to make packaging truly circular—through high recycled content, recyclability, and the exploration of regenerative raw materials.
Our companies were founded around the same time, and we’ve grown in parallel—driven by shared values and a team of passionate, outdoors-loving changemakers.
To help our communities understand what Flexi-Hex® brings to the table—and how together we’re pushing circularity and innovation forward—we’re excited to dig into your most pressing questions.
Let’s dive in,
Sam Boex - Co-Founder and Creative Director, Flexi-Hex®
Saloni Doshi - CEO & Chief Sustainability Officer, EcoEnclose
Innovation: Where does it come from for you, and how is it reflected in your product designs?
Sam - I know it sounds clichéd, but our inspiration truly comes from nature, both in a literal and broader sense. Our patented sleeves, designed with honeycomb material, showcase this natural inspiration, providing the incredible strength our protective packaging is known for. When tackling challenges at Flexi-Hex®, we often step out of the office and take a walk to the end of the pier in the fishing village where our headquarters is located.
Saloni - My background in regenerative agriculture deeply shapes how I approach sustainability and our vision for circular packaging today. That experience instilled in me a sense of optimism—a belief that the entire lifecycle of something, from raw materials to manufacturing to end-of-life, can actually benefit the planet.
Just as a permaculture farm can heal soil, restore water cycles, and revive biodiversity, I often ask: What would it look like for packaging to do the same? What if packaging didn’t just minimize harm but actively contributed to environmental regeneration?
What companies/industries does Flexi-Hex® work for and why?
Sam - Flexi-Hex® started with packaging for surfboards. As surfers ourselves, it was a passion project born out of our own frustrating experiences with buying new boards through the mail. We wanted to improve the unboxing experience, and it turns out we weren't the only ones who felt that way. Before we knew it, we were gaining traction in the drinks industry. In the UK, brands like Diageo, Brewdog, Sipsmith, and Bombay Sapphire use our solutions for their e-commerce fulfillment.
Then we launched the Flexi-Hex® Air range, which features the same sleeve design but is made from lighter tissue paper. This opened up new opportunities for us in tableware, wellness and beauty, electronics, and more. Honestly, if you have a fragile product that needs to be mailed, we probably have a protective packaging sleeve to help. Think of us as a better alternative to bubble wrap!
Saloni - EcoEnclose has a broad and diverse solution set - from mailers to shipping boxes to void fill, protective packaging, packaging tape, and more. Across all of our categories, our commitment is to offer the most circular and sustainable solutions out there and ensure those solutions meet our brands' functional and budgetary needs. We service eco-conscious direct-to-consumer brands of all sizes who want to ensure their packaging and shipping experience supports and elevates their ethos and commitment to sustainability. We work with small brands that sell via Etsy, mid-sized brands with Shopify and BigCommerce shops, and large enterprise brands that ship thousands and millions of orders weekly.
What is your take on circularity in the packaging industry?
Sam - We often get questioned about the impact of paper vs plastic and, more specifically, about the carbon footprint comparisons between the two materials. But we don’t think it’s as simple as good vs bad. There are countless variables when choosing the best materials for protective packaging. However, one thing we are sure of is that when designing a product, you have to consider far beyond just carbon emissions alone. And poor design is the real issue. Single-use plastic for protective packaging is a poor design. Why? Because plastic is harmful to the environment long after it's useful. Good design respects the world’s natural cyclical processes.
Saloni - At EcoEnclose, we’re known for bringing a lot of nuance (sometimes too much, I’ve been told!) to the complex world of sustainable packaging. Our guiding light is circularity—a vision where packaging is made from packaging, can be turned into packaging again, and is sourced from raw materials that are net restorative to the planet.
But we don’t stop there. Our decision-making framework also considers the broader web of environmental challenges—climate change and carbon emissions, freshwater use, biodiversity loss, deforestation, nutrient runoff, ocean plastic pollution, and more. (If you’re curious, the Planetary Boundaries Framework offers a helpful visualization of the many systems at play.)
Within this context, EcoEnclose focuses on maximizing recycled content whenever possible. When recycled inputs aren't feasible—particularly for paper—we prioritize responsibly sourced materials with minimized deforestation risk. We design packaging for easy, widespread recyclability and actively support innovation in emerging raw materials that could shape the future of sustainable packaging.
We also believe in offering brands flexibility and choice. For example, brands focusing on minimizing carbon emissions or managing costs may find that 100% recycled plastic is the most strategic fit, given its lower carbon footprint and production efficiency. Others—especially those prioritizing recyclability, renewable inputs, or reducing the risk of ocean plastic pollution—may lean toward responsibly sourced paper-based packaging as the more environmentally forward solution.
Flexi-Hex® is made from 100% recycled paper. What are its benefits?
Sam - We compared paper and plastic as materials for packaging using the principles of Donut Economics. In almost all areas, paper is a better choice. Today, the lifecycle of paper is primarily circular, meaning it can be reused and recycled efficiently. By choosing 100% recycled paper, we support this circular system and add value to recycled paper. People are familiar with paper and find it easy to recycle at home. Additionally, our sleeves are composted in just 6 weeks during our at-home tests and contain no harmful substances that pollute the environment.
Saloni - That’s a great question with two key parts. First, what are the environmental benefits of paper as a packaging material? Second, why is it so important to prioritize 100% recycled paper?
Paper: Paper packaging is widely accepted in curbside recycling programs, and if it ends up as litter, it naturally biodegrades—meaning it doesn’t contribute to ocean plastic pollution or microplastics.
100% Recycled Content: When brands choose paper for sustainability reasons, we strongly advocate prioritizing 100% recycled content. Recycled paper significantly reduces the environmental impact of packaging, minimizing deforestation and biodiversity loss, using less water and less energy, and emitting less carbon than virgin paper.
Just as importantly, using recycled content helps close the loop. Paper's widespread recyclability only works if there’s a strong demand for recycled fiber. When brands opt for 100% recycled paper, they help sustain and strengthen the circular economy that makes curbside recycling possible in the first place.
Who else in the packaging industry is disrupting and being innovative that people should know about?
Sam - As I mentioned earlier, some incredible innovators and entrepreneurs are pushing the boundaries in the packaging industry. Take Notpla and Sway, for example -they're working their magic with seaweed to create sustainable packaging solutions. Then there's Woola, which, as you might have guessed, uses wool to replace bubble wrap. And let's not forget Cruz Foam, also founded by surfers and inspired by the ocean, with 70% of their material input coming from upcycled food waste. Seeing how these companies are revolutionizing the industry with their innovative approaches is amazing!
Saloni - We’re especially inspired by the entrepreneurs pioneering novel materials with the potential to be truly regenerative. A better future depends on replacing fossil fuels with restorative, bio-derived alternatives and diversifying the sources of paper so we can move away from our heavy reliance on logging.
Across the landscape, innovators are rising to the challenge. Sway is making incredible strides using responsibly sourced seaweed as a packaging input. Genera is one of several companies reimagining the paper supply chain with next-gen, non-wood feedstocks. Living Ink is replacing fossil fuel-based pigments with carbon-negative algae waste.
We’re also excited about the potential of sustainably grown sugarcane as a plastic alternative, agricultural and food waste as both paper and plastic inputs, and an array of carbon-sequestering materials just beginning to emerge. With all this innovation underway, we can imagine a future for restorative packaging — not extractive.
Any final words?
Sam - We love this statement by Kate Raworth, the brains behind Donut Economics: “If you are not designing for planet, what planet are you on?”
Saloni - We see forward-thinking brands as essential drivers of the change our world so urgently needs, especially in today’s turbulent times. Companies that are not just maintaining but deepening their commitment to sustainable products and packaging and boldly adopting cutting-edge, game-changing solutions are actively shaping the future we all hope to build.
If you're one of these brands, we urge you to take the leap. Order samples. Run pilots. Find ways to incorporate these transformative materials and solutions into your lineup. Perfect solutions don’t pave the path to a better future—it’s paved by bold action.
