What is the difference between the EcoX 2.0 and the original?
When we released this mailer in 2020, we received feedback that companies wanted an even stronger and more durable option.
Our latest version is still highly water resistant due to the specific sizing agents in the mailer, all of which are plastic free. However, the mailer is thicker and made with less post-consumer waste, giving the material more strength.
Decreasing the post-consumer waste was a difficult decision for us, given our focus on circularity. The benefits of a mailer that could help more companies achieve their plastic-free packaging goals was worth the slight decrease in post-consumer waste.
If I want a plastic-free poly mailer, is the EcoX a good option for me?
Kudos to you for considering plastic-free alternatives to poly mailers.
When going plastic-free, we strongly recommend natural fibers such as paper, and discourage companies from exploring bioplastic options.
Compostable bioplastic simply does not make sense for ecommerce packaging. Learn more here and here.
Furthermore, we strongly recommend that you seek out 100% recycled paper packaging or (if 100% recycled isn’t going to work for you) certified sustainable paper or next generation fibers. A common misconception is that going from plastic to paper is always a great transition, and that all paper is good. Unfortunately, a lot of paper in our world today comes from ancient and endangered forests, and responsible brands who are transitioning to paper must be thoughtful about where their paper comes from. Learn more here.
With our paper hierarchy and framework, we believe that 100% recycled (and high post-consumer waste levels) paper based packaging is a great plastic-free alternative to a poly mailer. EcoEnclose offers six different such paper options, three of which are great solutions for apparel companies and wonderful plastic-free poly mailer alternatives - the Paper Apparel Mailer, the Kraft Mailer and the EcoX Mailer.
Is the EcoX Mailer water-resistant?
The EcoX Mailer has been designed with water-resistant properties, making it an excellent alternative to traditional poly mailers. Check out this video to see the EcoX Mailer in action!
What are the differences between EcoEnclose's suite of paper mailers?
In general, we consider the 100% Recycled Kraft Mailer to be our economy option. It is the least expensive, thinnest paper mailer we offer, and does have 90% or more post-consumer waste. In general, we guide companies that “if the Kraft Mailer works well for you, stick with it, its a great plastic-free mailer!”
The EcoX is our value option. It is thicker than the Kraft Mailer (11pt versus 10pt) and has only 70% post-consumer waste (the remaining 30% is post-industrial, which has stronger and cleaner fibers, giving the mailer a higher level of strength). There are differences between post-industrial and post-consumer waste - learn more here. The EcoX is an amazing option for companies that need a stronger solution that the Kraft Mailer and/or want a little extra water protection.
The Paper Apparel Mailer is our premium option. It is the most expensive of the three, but utilizes the thickest paperboard of them all, and has top and bottom creasing for expandability and a clean, classy finish.
All three are 100% recycled, curbside recyclable, and naturally biodegradable.
Which is more eco-friendly - a 100% recycled poly mailer or a 100% recycled paper mailer?
The debate between paper and plastic is a complex one! If you’re seeking out eco-friendly options, we offer this summary of guidance.
100% recycled poly options have a lower carbon footprint, provide more protection and have a much lower total cost than 100% recycled paper alternatives. However, they are thin film, and must be recycled and grocery drop off bins for most households (or can be sent back to EcoEnclose), making them harder to recycle. 100% recycled paper mailers are curbside recyclable and naturally biodegradable (so they won’t sit around in the environment if they do end up as land or ocean litter). However, these paper mailers do have a higher carbon footprint, are more expensive, and space intensive to ship and store.
What curbside recyclable mailer does EcoEnclose recommend?
All of our six types of paper mailers are 100% recycled and curbside recyclable, making them a great option for any brand seeking a plastic-free and/or circular packaging strategy. Choose between them based on your functional and sizing needs, and rest assured that they are all strong, effective, eco-friendly options.
