Meet Sway Packaging
Your Sway bag is made from seaweed, plants, and compostable polymers. After use, it’s home and industrially compostable.
Note: This bag is not recyclable. When compost isn’t available, please dispose of it in the trash. In a landfill, it will break down like a piece of fruit.
You are among the first to experience this brand new material, and your feedback directly helps shape the future of seaweed-based packaging. Have 5 minutes to tell us what you think?
What’s special
about seaweed?
Seaweed is an abundant, fast-growing, space-efficient marine crop that’s quickly gaining recognition for its ability to mimic plastic. When compared to common renewable packaging inputs like corn, potato, or sugarcane, the benefits of seaweed truly go above and beyond!
Seaweed thrives off just sunlight and seawater, requiring very few inputs, unlike resource-intensive terrestrial crops farmed through systems of industrial agriculture.
It’s also considered regenerative, creating positive impacts as it grows: increasing habitat for marine life, boosting biodiversity, and mitigating harmful climate change impacts like ocean acidification and erosion. New science shows that seaweed can even sequester substantial amounts of carbon!
Compostability Testing & Certification
Sway packaging is designed for home and industrial composting.
Certification
The material is certified through TÜV Austria, the global gold standard that confirms it breaks down safely without toxic residues or microplastics.
Sway packaging is constantly improving, which means that new iterations must be formally re-certified for compostability. Your bag may be labeled “certification pending” if the material is currently undergoing that process. All ingredients are certified compostable.
How to Dispose
Toss this bag in your backyard pile, countertop composter, or green bin. With heat, moisture, and microbes, it will fully decompose into healthy soil within 6 months.
Tips for Success
-
If your bag has an adhesive strip, cut off before composting.
-
If sending to industrial facilities, check your local guidelines first.
-
For faster decomposition, cut your bag into smaller pieces!
Don’t compost? Consider starting, or find a nearby facility! Farm programs, community gardens, or private services may also be available locally.
FAQs
What is this bag made from?
Seaweed, plants, and compostable polymers. All ingredients are certified compostable. The material is over 50% biobased, and increasing with every iteration.
What does it decompose into?
Per TÜV Austria certification, this material composts safely into carbon dioxide, water, inorganic compounds, and biomass. No microplastics, distinguishable remnants, or toxic residues left behind.
Will it decompose anywhere?
Sway packaging is designed for compost, where it breaks down with the help of heat, moisture, and microbes. Throwing it out in nature won't create the same magical decomposition formula — please don't litter.
How fast does it break down?
Per TÜV Austria certification, Sway materials break down within 6 months (and often less) in healthy compost environments. The same bag made from plastic would take 800 years to break down – into microplastics!
We'd love to see your composting results. Place your Sway bag in your home compost, snap photos along the way, and share how it breaks down through our feedback survey.
How can I make it break down even faster?
The smaller the piece of material, the easier microbes can break it down. To accelerate decomposition, cut your Sway bag into small pieces before placing in the compost.
What if I don’t compost?
You might have more options than you think! Municipal programs, farm drop-offs, and private services are widely available. Search "compost service near me" to find local options. Or if you're curious about starting a home compost practice, check out Sway's quick guide.
This material is not recyclable — when compost isn’t an option, toss it in the waste bin. Even when Sway bags aren't composted, this material has already made an impact by reducing petroleum and uplifting renewable and regenerative ingredients, like seaweed!
